CUFFS EXAM Q. 3 is worth 15 marks.
3.  In this question you will be rewarded for drawing together elements from your full course of study, including different areas of the theoretical
framework and media contexts.
How far does the extract try to create a sense that it is portraying 'real life'?
In your answer you should:
􀁸 analyse aspects of the extract giving detailed examples
􀁸 judge how far these aspects create a sense of watching 'real life'

This extract shows how it is meant to be shown realistically, showing real circumstances within the show, characters and other aspects of the show. The show itself does seem like 'real life' by the way its portrayed- many things help to make people think of this.

In the show there is ethnic equality and racial diversity shown- how women and men are seen as equal, this being a normality in the world we live in today. There are also people of different religions, for example- a Muslim police women, demonstrating how everyone is justified to have a high-power job. it i important that this is reflected in the show as it can influence the audience. there is also a gay policemen- proving how everyone is accepted and that they have made it important to incorporate modern day situations and out rule stereotypes revolving around this.

Normality is illustrated, and is important to showing the realistic feeling of the extract. They incorporate scenes in which they use places that are familiar the the common person, where we visit in our everyday life for example, supermarkets, coffee shops. there are also normal people filling these scenes making it seem more real when creating the setting, they don't stand out and blend in, giving the audience a relate able role, showing the reality within each scene.

There is no special effects or unusual aspects used in this extract, like fake or animated materiel, using green screens etc. they have deliberately kept the scenery, costumes and lighting simple, bringing up things that occur in every-day life.

there is a stereotype used when the criminals in this extract are clearly men, this has been done due to the fact men are seen as 'stronger' and are more likely to carry out a crime like this, this making the extract more realistic, and making the audience be able to relate more and understand what the police are going through due to emotions such as fear, stress as the tension is built up.

in some shots u see the camera as if it was in the eyes of the police, this camera angle shows how the producers are trying to make it seem as if you are in the story, and seeing it as though you are involved, even though you aren't. this could make the extract seem more realistic due to how you can see how it isn't all done professionally, proving how it is closer to being something someone would see regular rather then a initial experience watching this.

cuffs q2

analyse how far the extract depicts the police's point of view rather than the criminals' point of view.

throughout this extract there are more close ups and generally more appearances of the police. This shows how the creators are trying to get the audience to pick up on their emotion and their actions within this situation. There are further shots of the criminals, showing how they are less important, and we are just watching the policemen and women's reaction to the events that have just taken place. we also go onto see how the  police carry onto catch the criminals. initially the story shows is from the police's point of view and how they catch the criminals, not how the criminals escape.

There are also mask worn by the criminals, this showing how the audience can't 'get to know' them as such, because of their hidden personalities, and less of a characterization. Their masks represent the criminal's want to stay hidden. We only see their actions towards the police and barely anyone else, showing how the focus is mainly on the two policewomen who are at the crime scene.

The music playing in the background of the extract starts when the police start to chase the crimnals, this indicates how the action and intensity only starts when the police get involved and when they get involved in the scene, it also shows the criminals lack of point of view, how they don't tell the story, the police do showing how we follow the policemen and women's journies throughtout this particular situation.

Q1 CUFFS

Analyse how sound is used in the extract to create meaning. refer to at least two examples from the extract  in your answer.

There is a understated piece of music that is playing when action is taking place, this is demonstrated where we see the  police start to flood to the crime scene, this is where the tension starts building and the music begins to start. The music itself progressively gets louder and faster, heightening the tension within the situation.
Before the action starts there is the sound effects of the glass breaking and the screaming of the voices this obviously indicating the danger, and making the scene seem more realistic. When the police officers are sat in the diner there is calm background music playing and other people talking in the background it makes the scene seem calm, normalizing the situation. this juxtaposes the immediate panic when the other police women is screaming down the radio.

exam q8

The dark blue header might suggest shows importance of the title, showing this is the main focus of thee whole page overall. the burgundy colors might suggest of more a alerting color- being closer to the color red it would catch peoples eye immediately showing this is of a high importance on the front page. sans serif in a white color to create a more clear view of the title so reader are clear about what the story is about before they read it, this is an important element for a new paper- this font is also simple so therefore doesn't feature too much calligraphy. It uses bold words to define the more important words and help people to understand more about the article from a first glance. the homepage could be seen as 'serious' because of the articles featured - how they speak to the reader, or how there are quite dark pictures depicting some serious stories, not for a particular audience and more for the more mature people of society. Most of the text is written in first person having the subject of 'I' most often - the objectification of a news paper is for people to find out what is happening in other peoples lives, therefore using this address would help to engage the reader and  distress what the whole idea of the paper is. this also helps attract more people to read the stories as people are interested in events that are occurring in other peoples lives.  sympathetic and emotive language is used in sad stories to create more drama, and make people interested- not only this but to express  the meaning behind the story one headline is "can i forgive the man who raped me?" this is a rhetorical question also to leave the readers on edge (a cliff hanger). this being a question makes people want to read it to see thee answer- and here their journey. "comedy horror-movie racial tensions" - this could appeal to a lot of people who feel strongly about this situation and feel as if they are outraged because of this making you want to find out the situation and even make a difference.
